This Is Not An Infrastructure; It Is About Rhythm.

Interventions, Performance, Experimental Practice | CN︎

Infrastructures could be seen as one of the physical entities that set the rules for people's behaviours and actions. The combination of the actions that people produce as a result of subjective thinking and the actions that they produce as a result of the training of rules over time, results in some specific rhythms.
In this context, the rhythm project is to explore a new way to experience people’s interaction with those infrastructures that seek to choreograph our movements. There are two kinds of infrastructures as the sample, the traffic light system and pavement, the deceleration railing. My research and exploration focus on pedestrians’ the rhythmic movements produced by the rules of these two. Then, I re-present them in the form of visual language (score / scenario), sound and performance. This project is aimed at allowing my audience to re-experience the rhythm that they ignored in usual and to provide them with a new cognition of the urban infrastructures.

︎ Infrastructure 1

Traffic Light and Pavement On Angel Station  [ 51°31'59.9"N 0°06'21.3”W ]
The countdown leaves 3 seconds.
3, 2, 1
The pedestrians speed their strides crossing the pavement from the two sides.
Those who walk on this ground suddenly become a group.
Perhaps an improvised dance group.
They react with the “rules” of the traffic light, Sound, countdown, etc.,
to perform a kind of certain rhythm.

The score 1, 2, 3, 4 referred to the labanotaion to describe people’s movements.

There is no alarming sound in the traffic light system at that place. However, the changes of red, green and yellow lights of traffic lights provide a kind of silent rhythm and define the time and areas for people's running, walking and pausing, while these actions could be classified to response the light changing.
This video is to show this kind of interaction.

︎ Infrastructure 2

The Deceleration Railing On Canary Wharf Passway  [ 51°30'15.6"N 0°01'39.0"W ]

A man walked with carrying stuff.
A couple walked with hand in hand.
A woman jogged with a baby stroller.
A man walked with swinging a signle arm.
They passed through a group of railing to create the melody that you heard.
